The National Lock Company was founded by three Swedish industrialists in 1903 because they saw a need for furniture locks. The company’s product line soon expanded to include kitchen, appliance and furniture hardware, door locks, fasteners, and metal stampings. One of the founders, Frank Hogland, served as president and manager of the company until his death in 1938. Starting with eight employees, National Lock became one of Rockford’s largest employers by 1920. One out of twenty-five Rockford residents was a National Lock employee.National Lock was acquired by Keystone Steel and Wire in 1939. It then went through subsequent acquisitions and name changes until finally changing to CompX in 1993. The massive plant, including the 10-story clock tower, is still a Rockford landmark to see. The American Pickers even made a couple visits there.
