Caldor was a discount department store chain founded in 1951 in the northeastern US. They were known as the "Bloomingdale’s of Discounting". Caldor carried national brands at discount prices and never stocked closeouts or irregulars. The interiors of the stores were designed to look like high end department stores. Financial issues in the 1990’s led to all 145 stores being closed by May of 1999.
