The Pennsylvania Railroad was established in 1846 and was headquartered in Philadelphia. At one time it was the largest railroad after acquiring, merging and owning parts of 800 other rail lines and companies. In 1968, the railroad merged with New York Central and became Penn Central. Eventually, it went bankrupt and was consolidated with other companies.
