Celebrity Sports Center: Denver's Greatest Family Landmark
Ask any Denverite who grew up in the 1960s, 70s, or 80s where they spent their best Saturday afternoons, and there's a good chance the answer is the same: Celebrity Sports Center. For nearly four decades, this sprawling complex on East Evans Avenue was the heartbeat of Denver family life — bowling lanes, an arcade, a swimming pool, and miniature golf all under one roof.
It wasn't just a venue. It was a rite of passage.
How It Started
Celebrity Sports Center opened in 1960, backed in part by Walt Disney himself. The concept was bold: a one-stop family entertainment destination unlike anything else in Colorado. From day one, it delivered — and Denver loved it.
The Golden Years
Through the 60s and 70s, Celebrity became woven into the fabric of Denver life. Birthday parties, school trips, first dates — generations of kids learned to bowl there, splashed in that pool, and pumped quarters into arcade machines until their parents dragged them home.
The End of an Era
By the late 1980s, the entertainment landscape was shifting. Home video games and changing habits pulled crowds away, and in 1994, after 34 years, Celebrity closed for good. A Target now stands on the site — a fact that still stings for anyone who remembers.
Why Denver Still Remembers
No single venue has ever quite filled that gap. For Denverites of a certain age, Celebrity isn't just nostalgia — it's a reference point for a time when the city felt smaller, slower, and a little more magical.
That's the spirit behind our Denver collection at Bygone Brand.
