Burdines — Florida's Department Store
If you grew up in Florida, you grew up in Burdines. Founded in Miami in 1898, Burdines was the state's homegrown department store — the place where Floridians bought their back-to-school clothes, their holiday gifts, and their first grown-up outfits. It wasn't just retail; it was a ritual. The chain expanded across the state for over a century before being absorbed into Macy's in 2004, taking the name with it. For anyone who remembers the original, it's still Burdines.

Maas Brothers — Tampa's Hometown Store
While Burdines owned South Florida, Maas Brothers was the department store of Tampa Bay. Founded in 1886, it was a fixture of downtown Tampa and a beloved institution across the Gulf Coast for generations. The stores had that specific department store atmosphere — the perfume counters, the lunch counters, the sense that shopping was an event. Maas Brothers was eventually absorbed into Burdines in the 1990s, closing a chapter that Tampa shoppers still talk about.

Cypress Gardens — Florida's First Theme Park
Before Walt Disney World changed everything, Cypress Gardens was Florida's original attraction. Opened in 1936 near Winter Haven, it was famous for its botanical gardens, its water ski shows, and its Southern Belle hostesses in antebellum gowns. For decades it was the place Florida families took out-of-town guests — a uniquely Florida experience that felt glamorous and local at the same time. The park closed in 2009, but for anyone who visited, the memory is vivid.
Splendid China — Orlando's Forgotten Wonder
Before it closed in 2003, Splendid China in Orlando was one of the most unusual attractions in a state full of unusual attractions. The park featured miniature replicas of China's greatest landmarks — the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Warriors — spread across 76 acres. It was ambitious, strange, and genuinely spectacular. In a city defined by fantasy, Splendid China offered something different: a window into another world, built at 1/20th scale.

Wild Waters Water Park — Silver Springs' Summer Escape
Attached to the legendary Silver Springs nature park, Wild Waters was Central Florida's classic water park before the mega-parks arrived. For generations of Florida kids, a summer day at Wild Waters was the definition of a good time — the slides, the wave pool, the smell of sunscreen and chlorine. It was the kind of place that felt permanent until it wasn't. Wild Waters closed in 2016, leaving a gap that no amount of nostalgia can quite fill.
The Monster Disco — Key West After Dark
Key West has always had its own rules, and The Monster Disco was proof. A legendary nightclub in a city that takes nightlife seriously, The Monster was the kind of place where the night started late and ended later. Key West's bar and club culture has always been part of its identity — the end of the road, where the rules loosen and the music gets louder. The Monster was that spirit in a single address.

Chief Charley's Restaurant — A Florida Original
Florida's restaurant culture runs deep, and Chief Charley's was the kind of place that became part of a community's identity. The kind of restaurant where regulars had their table, where the menu didn't change because it didn't need to, and where showing up felt like coming home. Places like Chief Charley's are what give a city its character — and what people miss most when they're gone.
