Fontaine Ferry Park: Louisville's Beloved Amusement Park

For nearly a century, Louisvillians had a place to go when they wanted to forget their troubles and just have fun: Fontaine Ferry Park.

Opened in 1905 on the banks of the Ohio River, Fontaine Ferry was Louisville's great amusement park — a place of roller coasters, carousel rides, midway games, and summer nights that seemed to last forever. For generations of Louisville families, a trip to Fontaine Ferry was a rite of passage. It was where you went on school field trips, where teenagers went on dates, and where parents brought their kids to experience the same magic they'd felt as children.

At its peak, the park featured a wooden roller coaster, a Ferris wheel, a fun house, a swimming pool, and a ballroom that hosted some of the biggest names in music. It was, by any measure, the heart of Louisville's summer.

The park closed in 1969, a casualty of changing times and urban pressures. But for anyone who remembers it, Fontaine Ferry never really went away.
