Before every town had a lazy river at the local rec center, there were the water parks. The real ones. The ones with sun-bleached slides, concrete decks that scorched your feet, and a concession stand that sold Fudgsicles for a quarter. They were the unofficial headquarters of summer — and most of them are gone.

🌊 Wild Waters Water Park — Florida

Wild Waters opened in 1977 alongside Silver Springs in Ocala, Florida, and for decades it was a Florida family staple. With its winding flume rides and natural spring-fed pools, it had a character that modern parks just can't replicate. It closed permanently in 2016.

🌊 Water Mania — Orlando, Florida

Before Orlando became synonymous with mega-resort water parks, Water Mania was the locals' pick. Opened in 1983 on US-192 in Kissimmee, it was a beloved alternative to the tourist crowds — until it closed in 2005. If you grew up in Central Florida, you remember it.

🌊 Pleasure Island Water Fun Park — Muskegon, Michigan

Tucked along the shores of Lake Michigan, Pleasure Island in Muskegon was a summer rite of passage for generations of Michiganders. Its lakeside setting made it unlike any other park in the Midwest — and its absence is still felt every summer.
