Merlyn's Music Club: Madison's Beloved Rock Venue

On State Street in Madison, Wisconsin — the mile-long corridor connecting the University of Wisconsin campus to the State Capitol — there were bars, restaurants, record stores, and bookshops. And there was Merlyn's Music Club, which was something more than all of them.

The Club

Merlyn's was Madison's rock bar — the place where the city's music scene lived, where local bands built their followings and national acts came through on their way up. In a college town with a passionate music culture, Merlyn's occupied a central place: the room where the music was always good and the crowd was always ready.

State Street was Madison's main artery of youth culture, and Merlyn's was one of its beating hearts. The club drew from the University of Wisconsin's enormous student population while also serving the broader Madison community — a mix that gave it an energy and diversity that purely campus bars couldn't match.
