Shattered Cocktail Galerie & Danceteria: Columbia's Legendary Nightclub

In a college town, the nightclub is more than a bar. It's a rite of passage, a social institution, and a place where the memories that define a generation get made. In Columbia, Missouri — home of the University of Missouri — that place was Shattered.

The Club

Shattered Cocktail Galerie & Danceteria was Columbia's premier nightclub, a venue that combined the energy of a dance club with the ambiance of something a little more sophisticated than a typical college bar. The name alone — Cocktail Galerie & Danceteria — signaled that this was a place with some style, a place that took the nightlife experience seriously.

Columbia's bar and club scene has always been shaped by the University of Missouri's enormous student population, but the best venues in any college town are the ones that transcend the campus — that draw locals and students alike, that feel like they belong to the city rather than just to the university. Shattered was that kind of place.

The Dance Floor

The danceteria format — a club built around dancing, with a serious sound system and a DJ who knew what they were doing — was a product of the disco era that evolved through the 1980s into something more eclectic. At Shattered, the dance floor was the center of the experience. The music was loud, the drinks were cold, and the night stretched out in the way that only a great club night can.

The Shattered Cocktail Galerie & Danceteria Columbia Retro T-shirt, Baseball Tee, Pint Glass, and Sticker are for everyone who was on that dance floor. Find them in the Columbia collection.
