How It All Started

When World War II pulled most of America's male baseball players overseas, Philip K. Wrigley — yes, that Wrigley, of the chewing gum empire and Wrigley Field — had a problem. His Chicago Cubs weren't playing, and his ballparks were sitting empty. His solution was audacious: recruit the best female softball players in the country and form a professional league.

The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) launched in 1943 with four teams. Rockford, Illinois got one of them. They called themselves the Peaches.

The Peaches Dominate

Over their 12-season run, the Rockford Peaches won four AAGPBL championships — in 1945, 1948, 1949, and 1950. They were the winningest franchise in the league's history. Players like Dorothy "Dottie" Kamenshek, widely considered the best player in the league, became local legends. Kamenshek's first baseman skills were so impressive that a men's minor league team once tried to recruit her.

The team played at Beyer Stadium, a beloved Rockford landmark that still stands today. On game nights, thousands of Rockford residents packed the stands — women, men, and children alike — to watch some of the best baseball being played anywhere in the country.

The AAGPBL folded in 1954 as television drew audiences away from minor league sports. The film, starring Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, and Madonna, was a massive hit and reignited interest in the real women who played the game.
