The 602 Club got its name from its address, 602 University Avenue. Opening in 1951, the 602 Club was a place that attracted a very diverse group of people. This included artists, activists, intellectuals, scholars and misfits. It was also an early gathering spot on Friday and Saturday nights for the gay community of Madison. This bar was not one for loud music or blaring TV's. Instead, the atmosphere was conducive for loud and productive conversations. The 602 Club closed in 1994.
