The A Frame was opened in 1977 by Pete Olson and Terry McDonald. Dave Chipalla came in soon after. The building’s unique A Frame shape was created for the previous Heap Big Beef restaurant. It originally opened as a bar that just served a few sandwiches, the A Frame quickly expanded their menu due to customer demand. Some of the favorites included “The Breakaway”, “The Back Packer” and French Onion Soup. After being sold in 1991, it continued on for a few years before closing. Various business have come and gone since then, but the building still stands on North Main Street in Northwest Rockford.
