The Austin Opry House, often affectionately called the “Austin Opera House,” was born in 1977 when Willie Nelson transformed the old Terrace Motor Hotel at 200 Academy Drive into a 1,700-capacity concert venue. Over the next 15 years, it hosted an eclectic lineup of music legends ranging from Ray Charles and Tina Turner to Stevie Ray Vaughan—who recorded several live albums there. The venue featured a maze-like interior and multiple entrances, which added to its quirky charm and underground vibe.
