The Big Sky Drive-In Theater opened on Madison’s far west side in May 1954. For the next 30 years, it hosted thousands of families piled in station wagons, couples necking in convertibles and anyone else who wanted to enjoy a movie in the fresh air on a giant screen. It was Madison’s largest outdoor theater with enough space to reportedly accommodate 1,100 cars. The theater closed in 1984, but as they say — the show must go on. A new indoor movie theater — the Point Cinema — was soon built on a parcel of land nearby and is in operation still today. Fittingly, it’s address is on Big Sky Drive.
