Boy Blue Ice Cream shops first appeared in Milwaukee in the early 1960s when the operators of 11 Carvel ice cream stores broke away to form their own company. By the late 60s, Boy Blue was ready to expand and soon had nearly 40 locations around the greater Milwaukee metro area, plus shops in Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Nebraska and Florida. Despite plans for hundreds of additional stores around the U.S., eventually the tide turned. Most of the Boy Blue locations were gone by the 1990s. The last location on Lincoln Avenue held on another two decades before closing in 2014.
