The Cathay House was one of Madison's most iconic restaurants. It was opened by Yew K Low and his wife, Ivy, in 1954. It occupied a spot on East Washington Avenue, where it became famous for its Egg Foo Young and Chinese Spaghetti. Generations of Madisonians tried their first Chinese cuisine at the Cathay House. The restaurant changed ownership in the early 1980s and continued to operate until it finally closed its doors in 1997.
