The Detroit Express brought professional soccer to Michigan in 1978, playing their home games at the Pontiac Silverdome. Led by English soccer star Trevor Francis, the team quickly made a name for itself, winning a division title in its debut season. After moving to the American Soccer League, the Express captured a championship in 1982 before folding the following year.
