The Detroit United Railway (DUR) was once the backbone of public transit in southeastern Michigan, connecting Detroit to surrounding cities with an extensive electric streetcar and interurban rail system. Founded in the early 1900s, it made travel between Detroit, Pontiac, Flint, and other towns faster and more convenient. At its peak, DUR operated hundreds of miles of track, making it one of the largest interurban rail systems in the country. However, as cars and buses became more popular, the railway couldn’t keep up and eventually shut down by the 1930s.
