Go back to St. Louis in the 1950’s through the 1960’s. You find yourself on Olive and Boyle Streets in the midst of a bustling entertainment district. There were art galleries, restaurants, taverns, jazz clubs, coffee houses, antique shops, and theaters. At the height of this area’s popularity, there were more than 50 businesses. The district was known for lit gas streetlamps and Victorian architecture. You would find entertainers starting their careers in the clubs of Gaslight Square. Some of these people included Jerry Stiller, Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis, and the Smothers Brothers. Famous businesses from this district include the Three Fountains, Laughing Buddha, Two Cents Plain, Crystal Palace, Red Carpet, and so much more. Gaslight Square lost its luster to crime, decay, and growth of the suburbs. It is now a residential area with most of its past life gone.
