Imagine a giant neon sign flashing the words “Hungry Hungry Hungry” over and over again. For decades, this was the beloved beacon that attracted customers to the Monona Root Beer Stand across from the beach at Olbrich Park on Madison’s east side. Famous for its car hops, chocolate malts and, most of all, its homemade curly fries, the “Hungry Hungry” (as it was best known) was a Madison landmark for more than 40 years. It later became the Big Jon’s restaurant before closing in the mid-1990s.
