The Kansas City Spurs helped put professional soccer on the map in Kansas City, playing from 1968 to 1970. The team reached the top in 1969, capturing the NASL championship with a thrilling 2–0 victory over the Baltimore Bays in its final home game of the season. Despite winning a title and drawing enthusiastic crowds early on, the Spurs folded after the 1970 season.
