Karl Ratzsch’s was a legendary Milwaukee restaurant that began in 1904 as Hermann’s Café before moving to East Mason Street and taking the Ratzsch name in 1937. Known for traditional German cuisine, it became a beloved downtown institution and a gathering place for generations of Milwaukee families. The restaurant was famous for its elegant atmosphere, hearty German specialties, and connection to the city’s German heritage. After 113 years, Karl Ratzsch’s closed in 2017, leaving behind a cherished piece of Milwaukee dining history.
