Mad Hatter was a popular chain of discotheques that began in Cleveland in 1971 and eventually grew to 11 locations nationwide. Known for enormous dance floors, elaborate lighting, powerful sound systems, and inexpensive drink specials, the clubs became a quintessential part of the 1970s disco scene. Locations operated in cities including Cleveland, Boston, Atlanta, and Milwaukee, each developing its own local following. As disco faded in popularity, the Mad Hatter chain declined, leaving behind a colorful legacy of 1970s nightlife.
