The Mercer Arts Center was one of the most important music venues for live rock and roll in New York City from 1971-1973. 35,000 square feet of performance space was transformed from run-down to an oasis inside an old, decrepit hotel located at 240 Mercer Street. The most famous band to have played there were the New York Dolls. Everything came to an end when the building collapsed on August 3, 1973.
