Many longtime Milwaukee residents still savor the wonderful memories of Mrs. Howe’s potato chips. Mrs. Ella Howe and her son started producing potato chips in the 1930s at a location on West Hopkins Street where they also had an ice cream cone manufacturing business. Successful for much of the 20th century, Mrs. Howe’s expanded its line and eventually offered popcorn, pretzels and other snack foods. Many attributed the unique Mrs. Howe’s flavor to the chips being fried in shortening rather than the more typical cooking oil. Sadly, that flavor is now just a memory as Mrs. Howe’s was sold in the 1980s and the brand was retired.
