Nelson Knitting was a company founded in Rockford, IL in 1870. Their claim to fame was inventing a work sock with a red heel in 1932. These distinctive red-heeled socks were turned into dolls called Sock Monkeys. You could get a sock monkey pattern when you bought yourself a pair of these socks. The factory closed in 1992
