The Pittsburgh & West Virginia Railway (P&WV) was a vital rail link connecting Pittsburgh to Wheeling, West Virginia, and beyond. Established in the early 1900s, it was designed as part of the so-called "Alphabet Route," a network of smaller railroads that provided an alternative to the big-name railroads for freight shipments. Though it never became a major passenger line, P&WV played an important role in transporting coal, steel, and other goods through the region. In the 1960s, it was leased by the Norfolk & Western Railway and later became part of the modern-day Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway.
