For a generation of Peorians, their first taste of Mexican food likely came at one of the city’s iconic Pepé Taco restaurants. With locations on Western Avenue and North University, Pepé Taco served up an Americanized version of Mexican staples, including tacos, burritos, nachos and the famous Pepé Taco chili. The restaurant survived and thrived for more than 30 years before closing in 2005.
