Private Indoor Terrain, aka The PIT, began with Mike Kaiser. Mike started ridingbicycles at an early age, starting his first stunt show team at age 13. The Riders withAggression (RWA) show team began performing shows at bike shops and festivals in1986. RWA continued to perform shows with sponsorships until 1993. At that time there were ramps in the front and back yard of Mike’s parent’s house, where about a dozen riders rode daily. Then they needed a place that was indoors so they could continue toride through the cold winter months. The PIT started and the team began to be knownas The PIT Stunt Team. The PIT started as a private club with all members paying $50 per month and receiving a key to the building. The PIT became known for this unique beginning with all members having a key. This went on for the first year and a half, untilit got to be too popular and had to be opened to the public. The PIT landed on Williams Ave in Rockford, IL and operated for 10 years with daily admissions, demos, concerts, skating and bicycle contests. The PIT Skatepark was the breeding ground of many talented action sports athletes, from BMX, skateboarding, and inline skating. At the time, The PIT Skatepark was one ofthe only indoor places around and was always giving back to the sport and community. It was the only park in Illinois to support the Tony Hawk skate for free day event. It was well known that if you were there having a good time, it was almost never shutdown. The lights stayed on until everyone was ready to go and the staff would ratherride with you than sit inside an office and yell. How often do you get that? The PIT wasopen seven days a week. Since all of the employees rode, there was always someonethere all hours of the day and night. Numerous action sports pros that were on tourwould stop by The PIT as they were passing by on their tours. The camaraderie was Real. There was always something happening every day and people were drawn to it.Whether there was a Friday night lock in, concert, contests, or ANYTHING, The PIT was always busy and full of energy and inspiration.
