Rockford Products is the reason Rockford is nicknamed “Screw City”. The idea for this worldwide manufacturer, importer, and distributor of fasteners and other industrial products came from the idea of one man, Swan Hillman. In 1929, Rockford Screw Products was formed and would grow with regular expansion in the 1930’s and 40’s. It would expand into larger facilities, plant locations, and into areas outside of Rockford. In 1969, the name changed to Rockford Products Corporation to reflect all of its offerings. By 1976, Rexnord Inc. purchased the company but seven executives arranged to buy the company back in 1985. Some milestones for Rockford Products include a three year stint as the nation’s leading aircraft bolt fabricator and ranking among the nation’s five largest manufacturers of fasteners. Through the sagging economy of the 1980’s and a bankruptcy buyout in 2007 by a private equity firm, Rockford Products has been a part of Rockford’s industrial landscape. Sadly, this company’s last chapter came to a close in 2016.
