"Three cheers for Rockford High School." Rockford West opened its doors on Rockton Ave in 1940 due to a growing community with partial funding from the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The Red and Black colors were inherited from the soon to close Rockford Central “Rabs”, however they chose to be called “Warriors”. Under coach Alex Saudargas, the Warriors won back-to-back basketball championships in 1955 and 56. West High School became a middle school in 1990 and is still known as the West Warriors.
