Many Midwesterners fondly remember having a Big Scot double burger, french fries and a chocolate shake at a local Sandy's Hamburgers. The Illinois-based chain was started in 1958 as a direct competitor to the quickly growing McDonald's chain. It's first location was in Peoria and over the next 15 years, the chain grew to some 240 Sandy's stretching across Illinois and the Midwest with locations are far afield as Florida, Colorado, Canada and Belgium. Known for its memorable mascot — a dancing Scottish woman — and the plaid berets worn by its employees, Sandy's thrived throughout the 1960s, but in the early 70s, pressure from larger chains was mounting and in 1973, the majority of the Sandy's locations switched and became part of the Hardee's restaurant chain.
