Schuster’s Department Store was founded in 1883. Instead of one downtown location, Schuster’s had several neighborhood stores that were conveniently located on the streetcar system routes. A lasting legacy of Schuster’s is Billie the Brownie, which started as a Christmas character. Rival Gimbels bought Schuster’s in 1962, and the store was operated as Gimbel-Schuster’s until 1969.
