Strawbridge & Clothier was a beloved Philadelphia department store chain, founded in 1868 by Justus C. Strawbridge and Isaac H. Clothier. Known for its flagship location at 8th and Market Streets, the store was a symbol of quality and elegance, with impressive architecture and a strong focus on customer service. It became a retail pioneer, opening one of the first suburban department store branches at Suburban Square in Ardmore in 1930. After more than a century as a family-run business, the brand was eventually acquired by May Department Stores in 1996 and later became part of Macy’s in 2006, closing the chapter on a cherished Philadelphia institution.
