For much of the 20th century, the Arena's history was St. Louis' history. Opening in 1929, the St. Louis Arena was a mammoth exhibition hall that rivaled Madison Square Garden as one of the largest in the nation. A 13-story building could have fit inside. For 70 years, the Arena played host to conventions, concerts, circuses and every type of sporting event you can imagine — from soccer and basketball to boxing and roller derby. For years, it was home to the St. Louis Blues hockey team. Despite its deteriorating condition, the "Old Barn" as it was fondly called, had many fans in the city. But time stops for no man and the Arena was razed in 1999.
