In 1956, Ed Thompson opened a small, three aisle grocery store at Knoxville Avenue and Ravine in Peoria, Illinois. By 1966, Thompson Food Basket stores had been added in Peoria at Knoxville and Corrington and at Sheridan and Giles, as well as in the towns of Morton, Sunnyland, Bartonville, Ottawa and Streator. Eventually, three more stores were added in Peoria. The company became known for quality meats and friendly service. At Thompson's, they loved to carry out your groceries to your car. The beloved brand endured until 2001 when the Thompson Food Basket stores were sold or closed. Many thousands of great employees and satisfied customers walked through those doors during its 45 year history.
