The Top Hat opened on July 12, 1941 by A.C. Elliott and Merle Bergstrom. They served Coney dogs, hamburgers, B-B-Q, shakes, ice cream cones and treats. Moving north a block in 1956, a new drive in restaurant was built at 5335 North Second Street with "Music In Your Car." The Top Hat remained a drive in until 1965 when it was remodeled and became a buffet style restaurant and catering service. It remained in business until the mid 2000's when it was demolished. Fun fact: There was another Top Hat Drive In in Shawnee, Oklahoma. After finding out that the “Top Hat” name was already trademarked by the Rockford restaurant, they changed their name to Sonic Drive-in.
