This landmark was Northern Illinois' most famous resort and it put Rockton on the map. Founded by Walt Williamson in 1936, the Wagon Wheel featured a golf course, private landing strip, tennis courts, restaurants, ice arena, theater, bowling alley and indoor pool. Janet Lynn practiced at the Wagon Wheel's ice arena before winning her bronze medal at the Olympics. To the dismay of many, the resort closed in 1989. The final end to this once premier destination was a fire in 1999.
