Wieboldt’s was a Chicago department store founded in 1883 by William A. Wieboldt that grew into a popular neighborhood retailer. Known for good values and practical merchandise, it expanded to more than 15 locations throughout the Chicago area by the 1970s. Its downtown flagship at State and Madison became a prominent part of Chicago’s famous shopping district. Wieboldt’s struggled financially in the 1980s and ultimately closed its stores in 1987, ending more than a century of Chicago retail history.
